Discipline and Training

Godly discipline and training produce good fruit!

“ A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but an accurate weight is his delight.
When pride comes, then comes disgrace; but wisdom is with the humble.
The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them. Proverbs 11:1-3 (NRSVCE)

 “And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children—

“My child, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,
    or lose heart when you are punished by him;
for the Lord disciplines those whom he loves,
    and chastises every child whom he accepts.”

Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children; for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline? If you do not have that discipline that all children share, then you are illegitimate and not his children. Moreover, we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share his holiness. Now, discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it…”Hebrews 12:5-11 (NRSVCE)

“Those who spare the rod hate their children, but those who love them are diligent to discipline them” Proverbs 13:24 (NRSVCE)

Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray. Proverbs 22:6 (NRSVCE)

Ponder these words and apply them to yourself and those you care for!

“ I will praise you with an upright heart when I learn your righteous ordinances.
I will observe your statutes; do not utterly forsake me.

How can young people keep their way pure? By guarding it according to your word.
With my whole heart I seek you; do not let me stray from your commandments.
I treasure your word in my heart, so that I may not sin against you. Psalm 119:7-11(NRSVCE)
