From the time we are children, many of us are told things such as “don’t cry” or “there’s nothing to be sad about.” Throughout life, we are often taught that we should avoid unpleasant emotions at all costs.

I believe it is far healthier to “lean into” your experiences of pain, rather than trying to numb your emotions.

An important component of being able to cope with emotions is the practice of self-compassion, treating and responding to yourself in a way you would a loved one who is struggling.

Don’t forget you’re human. Emotions are normal. It’s ok to get sad, angry, be unhappy…just don’t stay there. Take a deep breath and refocus where you are headed.
