Let Freedom Ring!
Happy Fourth of July Everyone!
Thoughts About Freedom!
Freedom is not just a word.
Freedom is a state of mind.
2 Corinthians 3:17 “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
This weekend we celebrate our independence as a nation. We celebrate our freedom. Our country may have challenges, crises, and chaos on a daily basis, but we have our freedom. We are free to choose, free to dream, free to think, free to speak, free to worship, free to work, free to marry, free to have children, free to play, free to sing, free to travel, free to experience all the wonders of this world and the life with which God has blessed us.
This country was founded on freedom. In the 1600s, the pilgrims and other colonists came here to find religious freedom. In the 1700s, we fought a revolution for freedom from oppression. In the 1800s, we fought a civil war to make all men and women free. In the 1900s, we fought five wars to keep our freedom and bring freedom to other peoples. Like it or not, fighting for freedom has become the spirit of this country.
2 Corinthians Chapter 3 is about the transition from the old covenant through the Law, where the people could not see the face of God to the new covenant through Jesus Christ where we have the Spirit of the Lord placed upon us.
2 Corinthians 3:18 “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
Through our faith in the Trinity, the Holy Spirit upon us shows us that God is all around us, and Jesus Christ is within our hearts. What a tremendous blessing it is to live in a country where we are free to believe.
There are many quotations that speak of “freedom”. The one that comes to my mind first is: “Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty we are free at last.” Martin Luther King in his “I Have a Dream” speech speaks of the American Dream – “Freedom”
President Herbert Hoover said, “ Freedom is the open window through which pours the sunlight of the human spirit and human dignity.”
Motivational speaker and author Stephen Covey “Every human has four endowments, self-awareness, conscience, independent will, and create awareness. These give us the ultimate human freedom… the power to choose, to respond, to change.”
There are countless songs about freedom: Freedom –
Jimi Hendrix Horse with No Name – AmericaFree as a Bird – BeatlesPhiladelphia Freedom – Elton JohnAnd please listen to “God Bless the USA” by Lee GreenwoodThe images freedom brings to mind are limitless: birds flying, horses running, the American Flag waving, kids playing, flowers in a field, the ocean, mountains in the distance, a crowd cheering and people with open arms raised to the sky. But what is the most important part of our freedom – the responsibility to use our freedom wisely.
We need to make the right choices, head in the right direction and be right there whenever we are called. This is the cost of freedom – use it wisely or risk losing your freedom. James 1:25 “But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it-not forgetting what they have heard but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” Gracious God our Heavenly Father. Thank you for the gift of freedom. Help us to use Your gift wisely. Teach us how to invest our freedom to make America the “Land of the Free”. We pray for your love and protection for all the men and women who protect our freedom daily. In Your Son’s Precious Name, Jesus. Amen!
